A few comments, suggestions, and ideas….
I’m currently at the opening day of PCBC in San Francisco with a contingent of BC Wood members.
Outside of the City by the Bay it is extremely busy and as such, the California residential construction market is going full tilt.
The show is very busy with folks from all across the Western United States attending the 3 day event. It is only mid-afternoon of the first day of the show and members are already quite happy with the quality of leads generated.
The idea that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery is alive and well here, with nearly every non-wood company showing wood product substitutes. I have seen vinyl, ceramic, concrete, fibreglass, and even stone manufacturers that offer a product which mimics the colour and warmth of wood (although most of the time it doesn’t).
While talking to builders, many have conveyed the same continuing concern regarding the lack of qualified labour. There is no easy solution, but it is a contributing factor to the rising price of homes.
